On Saturday September 23rd, the Bartley Healthcare team participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. This effort is part of Bartley’s ongoing support and fundraising efforts for Alzheimer’s New Jersey.

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive disease, with dementia symptoms gradually worsening over several years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s Disease, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.  People afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.

Bartley’s team walks to end Alzheimer’s every year as a measure of support for its residents and their families, and Bartley’s dedicated staff of caregivers. “Events that raise funds and call attention to Alzheimer’s Disease is one of the ways we can make a difference in the lives of our residents and their families,” noted Laura Hoey, the COO of Bartley Healthcare, and one of the team members at the Alzheimer’s Walk in Point Pleasant.
