President and Chief Executive Officer
Philip Scalo is President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bartley Healthcare and is one of the founders and owners of the company. A graduate of Rutgers College and Rutgers Law School, Scalo spent 20 years as an attorney representing many growing businesses and entrepreneurs in diverse areas, including healthcare. He also served as General Counsel and Executive Vice President of an international trade show company. Scalo was the Managing Partner of Bartley Healthcare, which initially consisted of a 120-bed nursing home. As the need for Bartley services grew, he dedicated more of his time to Bartley, becoming its full-time CEO in 1996. He later managed Bartley’s growth into a 230-bed health care facility, including subacute and rehabilitation services and the planning, development and opening of The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living and Bartley at Home. Scalo serves as the Independent Owners Representative on the American Health Care Association Board of Governors. He also serves as a Board Member of the Health Care Association of New Jersey and Chairs the Legal Committee and the Political Action Committee. His civic and charitable activities include serving as a Trustee of the Board of Overseers of Rutgers University and as Chair of the Development Committee. He is also on the Business School, Nursing School and Institute for Gerontology Advisory Boards for Felician College. Scalo has been a speaker on various post-acute healthcare topics at national conventions and conferences. Phil Scalo has used his background to help lead the Bartley Healthcare team toward understanding and meeting the needs of Bartley’s patients and residents to enhance their quality of their lives.
Chief Operating Officer
Laura Hoey brings her diverse background and experience to Bartley Healthcare as Chief Operating Officer. She started her business career as an assistant with Columbia Pictures in New York City, then later joined a law firm in Fort Lee, NJ, where she held several positions, including Office Manager (where Philip Scalo, Bartley’s CEO, was a partner). She then joined Scalo to work in an administrative capacity for an international trade show company. In 1995, she joined Bartley Healthcare as the Operations Coordinator. In 2000, she was promoted to Vice President of Operations in which capacity she managed the business operations and expansion projects for Bartley before becoming the Chief Operating Officer in 2016. As Chief Operating Officer, Hoey manages all of the business, financial and administrative operations for Bartley Healthcare. Among Hoey’s accomplishments and contributions are overseeing the expansion of service lines, data management and the development and construction of the additions to the Bartley Healthcare facilities, including construction of The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living. She also serves as the Corporate Secretary to the Board of Directors and has been an instrumental part of Bartley’s growth, starting with her work while at the law firm on the initial development and start-up, and then continuing through all phases of Bartley Healthcare’s growth and its expanding programs. Hoey remains focused on quality and what best meets the needs of residents, patients and families.
Administrator, Bartley Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation
Lauren Kessler began her career in healthcare 13 years ago, after receiving her Bachelors of Arts Degree in Policy Studies from Syracuse University, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. That was followed, soon after, with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, with a concentration in Healthcare Administration and Policy, as well as a specialization in Gerontology from Baruch College, School of Public Affairs. Kessler’s healthcare career includes holding positions as Chief Operations Officer of an Assisted Living/Independent Living Company, Assistant Executive Director of a Continuing Retirement Community, and Assistant Administrator and Administrator in Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facilities in New York and New Jersey. She joined Bartley in November 2014, and during her time, has acted as the Assistant Administrator and Administrator of Bartley Healthcare, as well as Executive Director of the Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living. Kessler also manages the campus memory care programming, as well as Bartley at Home. She is committed to making a difference in the lives of our residents.
Executive Director, The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living
Joanne Ryan is currently serving as Executive Director at The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living. Ryan began her career with Bartley Healthcare as Administrator in April 2003 and was promoted in 2009 to VP of Administration. She earned her undergraduate degree in Social Work and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. She has accumulated 32 years of experience in the long-term care industry, starting as a part-time social worker, a director of social services. She earned her LNHA in 1990.
Danielle Batesko, RN
Wellness Director, The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living
Danielle Batesko is the Wellness Director at The Orchards at Bartley Assisted Living and has previously served as the interim Director of Nursing for Bartley Nursing and Rehabilitation. Batesko earned her RN nursing degree from Ocean County College and worked at a local hospital as a charge nurse on a med/surgical unit for several years. She’s been employed by Bartley Healthcare since 1987, starting as a staff nurse on the long-term care units then moving to the role of charge nurse. She was then the Assistant Director of Nursing for several years, responsible for education and employee health.
Director of Nursing, Bartley Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation
Debra Fischer, RN, has been an RN for 34 years. She has had both clinical and administrative roles. Throughout Debra’s extensive career, she has worked with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Fischer started her career as a candy striper, then becoming a CNA, then an RN. She earned her associates degree in nursing from Ocean County College in 1983. She has held nursing positions in hospital units including ER, ICU, CCU, Pediatrics, Recovery Room, and Post ICU. Fischer also has experience in home care, where she worked with both children and adults with high tech needs. She later took the role as Director of Nursing for a different home care agency, that covered two counties, working with mostly geriatric patients. Fischer has had 14 years’ experience as an Assistant Director of Nursing, in three different long term care rehabilitation facilities, before coming to Bartley as Director of Nursing.
Linda M. Gural
Director of Clinical Services, Bartley Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation
Linda M. Gural, MSN, RN, CCRN has more than 30 years’ experience in clinical nursing, including subacute nursing, supervision and clinical coordination. Her previous nursing positions include surgical intensive care unit of Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ, where she also served as Director of Patient Care. Gural served on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors, and is a past secretary of the ANA Political Action Committee. She is a past president of the New Jersey State Nurses Association and a past president of the New Jersey Institute for Nursing. Gural serves on the advisory board of Felician University School of Nursing and has served on the Thomas Edison State College W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing. She is a member of the Critical Care Nurses Association and the New Jersey League for Nursing. Gural received her Associate Degree in nursing from Ocean County College and a Master of Science in Nursing at Excelsior College in Albany, NY. She is certified in adult critical-care nursing and was previously certified as a medical surgical nurse. Gural is currently working towards a certification in gerontology.
Dr. Geronima Alday
Post-Acute Medical Director, Bartley Healthcare Nursing and Rehabilitation
Dr. Alday serves as Post-Acute Medical Director for Bartley. Alday is board certified in Family Medicine. She also holds a certificate of added qualification in Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine. Dr. Alday is a teaching faculty member, for Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School CentraState Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program.
